Tastemaker: Positive Artist & Designer, Jason Naylor

“Kindness is the key to success.”

In a society full of copycats, it’s refreshing to see people whether on their own or in business, stand up and take a stand for individuality, for uniqueness, for self. Tastemakers is dedicated to introducing the individuals and businesses who not only have an influence on society, but who are doing it as themselves, without apology, and in their own way. To those who make the mold rather than try to squeeze into one that currently exists, and to whom at the same time we cannot help but to be inspired and influenced by.

Artist, Jason Naylor

I like that my look is a bit of a juxtaposition to my artwork, which is bright and happy. I like to look kinda dark, but then make art that is uplifting.

FlyDuo: Please tell us a little about yourself:

Jason: I am originally from Salt Lake City, but have been in NY for 15 years. I visited in high school and it was so magnetic. I knew instantly that I’d end up here… I was so thrilled by the art and color and culture. I was made for NY… I grew up painting and drawing - my mother is an artist as well. She does portraits and real life stuff. So I was always making and creating, doing art classes, and it was always a big part of my life. I studied graphic design in college, and then came to NY and have been doing design and illustration ever since!

FlyDuo: How would you describe your personal style/aesthetic?

Jason: My personal style I would say is edgy, rock-n-roll and maybe a little dark. I wear mostly black. I have lots of tattoos and like to wear leather jackets and boots. I think growing up in such a conservative environment led me to want to look this way. I also like that my look is a bit of a juxtaposition to my artwork, which is bright and happy. I like to look kinda dark, but then make art that is uplifting.

FlyDuo: How important is individuality to you, both personally and professionally?

Jason: Individuality is absolutely CRUCIAL to me as a person, and also professionally. It is a theme in my artwork, and also is one of my core values. I strive for it regularly and encourage others to do so as well.

For me, authenticity comes from actively staying in my own lane - not worrying too much about what others are doing, making, thinking etc.

FlyDuo: How has being authentic and staying true to yourself benefited your career?

Jason: Well, authenticity is an extremely difficult thing. It’s so easy to say and to use that word, but really when it comes down it, knowing who I am and what I believe and stand for is fluid, and sometimes difficult to reach. And the more you think about who you really are, the harder it is to be “yourself.” So I have found that for me, authenticity comes from actively staying in my own lane - not worrying too much about what others are doing, making, thinking etc.

You have to be a little bit selfish to keep your eyes on the prize when it comes to what you think is really you. But standing up for what is me, and what I think is right as a creative is very important, and my clients expect that from me, that’s why they hire me. Not knowing what you think and feel about a design project can lose a client…. So stay in your lane and stand up for yourself.

FlyDuo: What quote or mantra best describes you, your mentality, and/or your beliefs, and why?

Jason: Kindness is the key to success. I live and breathe by this rule. And it has proven to be true time and time again. And the real reason is simple: Don’t you love when someone is nice to you? When someone smiles at you? When someone thanks you? Well, spread the love. You’d be surprised how far you can get in life just by being nice.

FlyDuo: Have you always been a fan of color?

Jason: Honestly, no, I actually have gone in and out of different phases. I have always liked the combination of black, white and magenta. But I’ve gone through visual phases of black and white, of dark black and edgy, gothic, sinister… but I’m going strong on the bright colors for now. Feels right.

FlyDuo: How does it feel to be considered a Tastemaker?

Jason: Well, I feel honored to be called that. It’s nice to know that others respect and value my opinions, style, and aesthetic. Everyone likes to be liked, and so of course, I feel special.

FlyDuo: Lastly, if you could give your style a name of its own, what would it be?

Jason: Creatively Positive x Positively Creative.
